Director’s Message

The Department of Social Work and Social Administration (SWSA) offers a range of major and minor programmes for the students of BSocSc. The programmes include: Major/Minor in Counselling; Major/Minor in Social Policy and Social Administration.
 
Our programmes emphasize social research and social sciences methods to solving human problems. The programmes will provide students with a solid foundation in social sciences. Whatever major you are taking and whatever career you will be choosing, you will benefit from the training in intellectual and practical dimensions. You will be equipped with effective communication skills, problem solving skills, and social consciousness.
 
The acquisition of the social work knowledge and skills is helpful to career development in all fields. As a graduate in Social Work & Social Administration, as well as the major/minor of various programmes, you are best equipped for positions of Executive and Administrative Officers in the government which finances and administers the largest bulk of social services, or planning and management positions in non-governmental and private agencies etc. You may also pursue further studies in the Master of Social Work, Master of Social Sciences, and Master of Philosophy programmes provide by the Department.

Objectives

 

Our projects are state-of-the-art endeavors designed to address significant public concerns, with an emphasis on timely action and social relevance to our community in Hong Kong and in the region at large. As one of the top universities in the region, HKU provides a backdrop for a larger vision of promoting knowledge exchange. Our mission shows that we are not just tucked away in the ivory tower but are also rolling up our sleeves and working in the community for the betterment of our society.

Our vision is to encourage students to engage in research projects for the creation of new knowledge and generation of innovative solutions to social problems through the acquisition of advanced research methodologies for socially innovative research and participation in social exposure programmes.

Social policy and social development strategies are key vehicles to actualize the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This major/minor programme adopts an interdisciplinary and multidimensional approach introducing students to fundamental theories and current debates in global and local social policies and development strategies.
