Abstract

Professor Wang will first outline the development of dementia care services in China over the past two decades. She will also share insights from translating community outreach program into policy impact, informing national strategies.

About the speaker

Professor Huali Wang is a Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry and Chair of the Clinical Research Division at the Peking University Institute of Mental Health. She also holds multiple key positions leading the development of geriatric mental health in China, including serving as President of the Chinese Society of Geriatric Psychiatry, Executive Vice President of Alzheimer’s Disease Chinese, and an elected board member of Alzheimer’s Disease International. She earned her BSc in Medicine from Beijing Medical University and her PhD in Psychiatry and Mental Health from Peking University. Supported by the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), she completed advanced training at Harvard Medical School and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California.

Professor Wang’s research focuses on the continuum of dementia care, spanning risk assessment, early diagnosis, and comprehensive support for patients and caregivers. Over the past two decades, she has led more than 30 research grants as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator, funded by major national and international bodies such as the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the World Health Organization (WHO). She has played a significant role in shaping national policy, contributing to the development of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan for Healthy Aging and the National Action Plan for Responding to Dementia in Old Age (2024–2030), and has collaborated with the WHO to develop global guidelines on dementia prevention and care. In 2025, Professor Wang was awarded the WHO His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Prize for the Promotion of Healthy Ageing in recognition of her outstanding contributions to geriatric and dementia care, becoming the first individual from China to receive this honour.
