Introduction
Since the 1990s, SWSA researchers have helped shape Hong Kong’s eldercare—co-developing the territory’s long-term care assessment instrument and informing the long-term care voucher and care allowance for frail older adults. Building on this policy impact, our work links care systems and social policy with healthy and meaningful ageing. We integrate mental-health and practice approaches and drive practice innovation and social enterprise, underpinned by health & well-being science. Our studies centre diverse populations—people with dementia, stroke, lifelong disabilities or mental disorders; those at end-of-life; healthy older adults; low-income and rural communities—alongside family caregivers and volunteers, co-designing equitable, scalable solutions for later life.
Professor Vivian Lou and Professor Terry Lum are leading efforts to strengthen Hong Kong’s long-term care ecosystem, drawing on their respective leadership in family caregiving (the Carer Space and Stand-By-You projects) and older-adult mental health (Project JoyAge). Professors Cecilia Chan and Amy Chow are experts on end-of-life and bereavement care. Professors Cheryl Chui and Lu Shiyu collaborate with Professor Lum on age- and dementia-friendly cities and timebanking, advancing social-innovation solutions across the ageing sector. Professor Peng Chenhong, an expert in social policy, is currently examining the social safety net for later life. Professor Sally Cao investigates ageing as a developmental process and how uncertainty affects the elderly’s mental health. Professor Peiyi Lu studies the relationship between housing and health, and evaluates the effect of social welfare policies. Professor Ethan Cheung focuses on neighbourhoods and the built and social environments, linking housing, walkability, and service access to ageing in place, quality of life, and well-being. Together, these scholars connect policy, community, and design to deliver scalable, data-driven improvements to long-term care and age-friendly development in Hong Kong.
Professor Vivian Lou is leading a research centre on gerontology, namely Sau Po Centre on Ageing to advance evidence, innovation and partnership for healthy, dignified ageing in Hong Kong, China and Asia. Bringing social work, public health, medicine, data science and policy together, the Centre conducts rigorous research on ageing-in-place, long-term care, family and carer support, mental health, and age-friendly communities; pilots scalable interventions with NGOs and government; and translates findings into practice guidelines and policy recommendations. As a hub for talent development, it mentors students and practitioners through placements, community labs and training on ethics-aware, person-centred practice, including the responsible use of AI in care. With a strong track record of cross-sector collaboration and community engagement, the Centre champions inclusion, empowerment and intergenerational solidarity, while building an open, impact-oriented knowledge base for practitioners and policymakers. Sau Po Centre on Ageing serves as HKU’s bridge between scholarship and real-world solutions for an ageing society.
